The Ministry of Governance & Discernment
The ministries of and partnership between Teaching and Ruling Elders is a distinct characteristic in the Presbyterian tradition.
"Presbuteros" is the Greek work used in the New Testament for "Elder" in the early church. Ruling Elders are so named not because they "lord it over" the congregation, but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life. Likewise, a Teaching Elder (or Minister of the Word and Sacrament) shall be committed in all their work to teaching the faith in word and in deed and equipping the people of God for their ministry and witness.
The Session of Peace Presbyterian Church is made up of Ruling Elders and the Pastor (or Teaching Elder), who is the moderator of the session.
The Ruling Elders of our Session are chosen by the congregation, and together with our Minister, exercise leadership, governance, spiritual discernment, and discipline, following the example of Jesus Christ. They co-labor in strengthening and nurturing the faith and life of our congregation.
An Elder is a person of faith, wisdom, and who is active in the worship and work of the church. In their ministries, Elders seek to live a life that demonstrates the gospel of Jesus Christ.
